Born in the temple town of Madurai on September 16th, 1916, to veena player Shanmukhavadivu (her initials M.S. record the birth place and mother's name), little Kunjamma, brother Sakthivel and sister Vadivambal grew up surrounded and filled by music. Her Grandmother Akkammal was a violinist. Their tiny home was close to the Meenakshi temple.
