FREDERICK W. SMITH

. The Memphis entrepreneur who established Federal Express in 1971, Frederick Smith was born in Marks, Mississippi, on August 11, 1944. He grew up in Memphis, was an avid student of the American Civil War during his teen years, and showed early signs of being an entrepreneur. While attending the Memphis University school, he and several friends started the Ardent Record Company, a small recording studio, but Smith ended his involvement when he left to attend Yale University in 1962.
