TOPIC OF THE DAY

Lao Tzu

It's hard to pin down a biography of Lao Tzu (570-490 BC). There are numerous legends about him. Many believe he never existed at all, while historians can point to several possible historical identities for him. Regardless, the legends give the book an endearing, human face. They all place him in Luoyang (marked in this map), the ancient capital of China

How does a Digital Camera Work?

Instead of exposing a photosensitive chemical known as film to a scene to create an imprinted image, most digital cameras use a charge-coupled device (CCD), an electronics instrument that creates a pixel map based on the electric charge generated when photons slam into a sensitive material. This phenomenon is called the photoelectric effect, and was elucidated by Albert Einstein in a famous 1905 paper. Less frequently used than a CCD is a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS). Because it is the digital camera mechanism in the minority, the CMOS will not be discussed in this article.

How Can I Remember Passwords?

Most of us have probably experienced times when the only thing standing between ourselves and an important transaction was our failure to remember a password. Computers, automated banking machines, point-of-sale card scanners and dozens of other electronic devices all depend on alphanumerical passwords for additional security. The problem is that remembering which passwords belong to which devices can be extremely frustrating. There are several ways to remember passwords, however, including mnemonic devices, personal references and word associations.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine or Valentinus, is the name of at least two celebrated
saints. The most celebrated are the two martyrs whose festivals fall
on February 14, the one, a Roman priest, the other, bishop of Terni. It
would appear from the legends that both lived during the reign of the
emperor Claudius (Gothicus); that both died on the same day; and that
both were buried on the Via Flaminia, but at different distances from
Rome. Many authorities believe that the lovers' festival associated with
St. Valentine's day comes from the belief that this is the day in
spring when birds begin their mating. There is another view held,
however.
