THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Communication

“Think like a wise man but communicate in the language of the people.”

- William Butler

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Management Communication

'It's been a learning experience for me', says Ben Rosen. 'The difference one person can make to a large organisation.' He's referring to Eckhard Pfeiffer, the chief executive of Compaq Computer - and the tribute is especially remarkable, coming from a man of Rosen's immense experience as a venture capitalist. Pfeiffer proved himself the 'right leader' for a company in deep trouble by overcoming deep corporate resistance to a sea-change in policy: and Rosen has no doubt about the key to this success.

Quotes by Buddha

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”

- Buddha

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Buddhist Approach to Management

Business Administration is one of the hot subjects in college curriculum all over the world nowadays. In this area, however, Buddhism has its own unique management theory and practice, which has evolved over a long period of time. As early as Sakyamuni Buddha’s time, the Sangha community has had a well-developed administration system. Over time, the system endured numerous changes and evolved sophisticated methods of management and leadership. In the Avatamsaka Suttra, commenting on the “three refuges”, Buddha said: “Taking refuge in the Sangha means one should make the Sanga a well-administered and harmonious community for all sentient beings.” From this comment, it can be seen that Buddhist Sangha communities were organizations which excelled in managerial skills.

Did you know that before bullfighting there was a magnificent Cretan sport (ancient Minoan civilization) called bull-dancing?

The bull dancers were unarmed, but using the principles still known in martial arts, literally took the bull by the horns, using it's own strength to perform magnificent acrobatics harmlessly up and over the charging beast.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Workplace conflict and negotiation

Money, time, people, technology – when you combine these elements, it is a recipe for conflict. How much downtime does your company experience as a direct result of conflicts that have escalated, consultants and sales people who are not effectively partnering, clients who are not receiving optimal service? Conflict that is not recognized early and resolved effectively can lead to low employee productivity and morale, along with client satisfaction and retention issues.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Manager

The need for good managers is not going away. It is intensifying. With ‘flatter’ organizations and self-directed teams becoming common; with personal computers and networks making information available to more people more quickly; the raw number of managers needed is decreasing. However, the need for good managers, people who can manage themselves and others in a high stress environment, is increasing.

Selling

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. ”

- Walt Disney

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Selling skills

To sell, you must believe in your product or service - and believe in yourself. Your selling skills depend, in large part, on your level of self confidence.

Other people sense whether or not you believe in yourself, and by extension, whether or not you believe in what you're doing. That belief is what persuades the customer or client to buy the product or service. Therefore, increasing your self confidence will improve your selling skills.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Competition

Competition is a contest between individuals, groups, nations, animals, etc. for territory, a niche, or a location of resources. It arises whenever two or more parties strive for a goal which cannot be shared. Competition occurs naturally between living organisms which co-exist in the same environment. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates, etc. Humans compete for water, food, and mates, though when these needs are met deep rivalries often arise over the pursuit of wealth, prestige, and fame. Business is often associated with competition as most companies are in competition with at least one other firm over the same group of customers.
