THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Dream

"There is nothing like a dream to create the future."

- Victor Hugo

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Risks and rewards of Entrepreneurship

Conventional wisdom is that starting a company is an extremely risky proposition. Data from many sources show that a high percentage of new businesses in the United States fail within the first few years. These statistics put fear in the heart of anyone thinking about launching an enterprise. I urge you not to be too concerned; it's not as bad as many people seem to think. In fact, the odds can really be quite good.

Luck

- Roy D. Chapin Jr.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Power affirmations for Luck

Have you ever come across people who seem to be lucky in just about every situation and circumstance? They find a good parking space when not even bad ones are available. They just happen to find a $50 bill on the pavement. By some uncanny coincidence, they meet the right people at just the right time. They land their dream jobs. They triumph over misfortune. They get the girl (or guy) in the end - just like in movies with happy endings.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Social Marketing

The health communications field has been rapidly changing over the past two decades. It has evolved from a one-dimensional reliance on public service announcements to a more sophisticated approach which draws from successful techniques used by commercial marketers, termed "social marketing." Rather than dictating the way that information is to be conveyed from the top-down, public health professionals are learning to listen to the needs and desires of the target audience themselves, and building the program from there. This focus on the "consumer" involves in-depth research and constant re-evaluation of every aspect of the program. In fact, research and evaluation together form the very cornerstone of the social marketing process.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Arthashastra

The Arthashastra (IAST: Arthaśāstra) is an ancient Indian Hindu treatise on statecraft, economic policy and military strategy which identifies its author by the names Kautilya and Viṣhṇugupta, who are traditionally identified with Chāṇakya (c. 350–283 BC), who was a scholar at Takshashila and later the prime minister of the Maurya Empire.

The original identification of Kautilya or Vishnugupta with the Mauryan minister Chānakya would date the Arthaśāstra to the 4th century BCE. However, certain affinities with smrtis and references that would be anachronistic for the 4th century BC suggest assigning the Arthaśāstra to the 2nd through 4th centuries CE. Thomas R. Trautmann and I.W. Mabbett concur that the Arthaśāstra is a composition from no earlier than the 2nd century AD, but based on earlier material. K.C. Ojha puts forward the view that the traditional identification of Vishnugupta with Kautilya was caused by a confusion of editor and originator and suggests that Vishnugupta is...

"You only need to make one big score in finance to be a hero forever."

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Financial crisis

The term financial crisis is applied broadly to a variety of situations in which some financial institutions or assets suddenly lose a large part of their value. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many financial crises were associated with banking panics, and many recessions coincided with these panics. Other situations that are often called financial crises include stock market crashes and the bursting of other financial bubbles, currency crises, and sovereign defaults.[1][2] Financial crises directly result in a loss of paper wealth; they do not directly result in changes in the real economy unless a recession or depression follows.

Many economists have offered theories about how financial crises develop and how they could be prevented. There is little consensus, however, and financial crises are still a regular occurrence around the world.

And to come to think of it, Economics was something I used to think I would never understand before I came to Chicago. Since my first Microeconomics course with Professor Topel in Fall quarter, I have been looking at life through the kaleidoscope of Economics and have found so many rich and beautiful patterns that I thought of putting them on paper and sharing them with you. TOPIC OF THE DAY

Communication

Consider this. Maria, head of her department, has a concern about the dedication of one or two of her staff members. Maria learned somewhere that it's not good to embarrass anybody in public, so at the next staff meeting, she says: "I have some concerns about some people in our department who seem uncommitted and unwilling to go the extra mile. I want it clear that we need maximum effort from everyone." And, she leaves it at that. Is this a good way to approach the issue?

Well, it certainly doesn't single out anyone, hence avoiding public embarrassment. But how do you think staff will react? First, each and every person in the room will wonder if they've somehow offended the boss. That's ALWAYS the first reaction to what we call "insinuation". The next reaction is: "Oh, right, Maria must be talking about Jethro (or some other coworker." Perhaps more serious is the effect this type of communication has on trust. Because of the lack of clarity and ambiguity, it wouldn't be surprising if staff began to doubt the boss's honesty or straightforwardness.
