THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Trust

“To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.”

- George MacDonald

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Scientific Management

The theory of scientific management is the “brainchild” of Frederick Winslow Taylor. In its simplest form the theory is the belief that there is “one best way” to do a job and scientific methods can be used to determine that “one best way”.

Taylor developed his theory through observations and experience as a mechanical engineer. As a mechanical engineer Taylor noticed that the environment lacked work standards, bred inefficient workers and jobs were allocated to people without matching the job to the worker’s skill and ability. In addition to this the relationship of the workers with the managers included many confrontations.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Social Networking

“Social Networking is the bane of a Society. It replaces human touch with the touch of a keyboard and replaces human-human friendship with human-machine-machine-human friendship. Instead of bringing us together, it splits us further.” - Lim Boon Chuan

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Social Commerce

Social commerce is a subset of electronic commerce that involves using social media, online media that supports social interaction and user contributions, to assist in the online buying and selling of products and services.

More succinctly, social commerce is the use of social media in the context of e-commerce.

The term social commerce was introduced by Yahoo! in November 2005 to describe a set of online collaborative shopping tools such as shared pick lists, user ratings and other user-generated content-sharing of online product information and advice.

The concept of social commerce was developed by David Biesel to denote user-generated advertorial content on e-commerce sites, and by Steve Rubel to include collaborative e-commerce tools that enable shoppers "to get advice from trusted individuals, find goods and services and then purchase them".

Today, the area of social commerce has been expanded to include the range of social media tools and content used in the context of e-commerce. Examples of social commerce include customer ratings and reviews, user recommendations and referrals, social shopping tools (sharing the act of shopping online), forums and communities, social media optimization, social applications and social advertising.

Some academics have sought to distinguish 'social commerce' from 'social shopping', referring to social commerce as collaborative networks of online vendors, and social shopping as collaborative activity of online shoppers.

International Financial Reporting Standards

International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) are Standards, Interpretations and the Framework adopted by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).

Many of the standards forming part of IFRS are known by the older name of International Accounting Standards (IAS). IAS were issued between 1973 and 2001 by the Board of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). On 1 April 2001, the new IASB took over from the IASC the responsibility for setting International Accounting Standards. During its first meeting the new Board adopted existing IAS and SICs. The IASB has continued to develop standards calling the new standards IFRS.

Ethics

“Winning is nice if you don't lose your integrity in the process.”

- Arnold Horshak

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Business ethics

Everyone knows right from wrong. Right? Wrong. People disagree about the definition of right and wrong all the time. That is why the topic of business ethics is currently front and center in the media and in office break rooms.

When daily, the next Enron, Arthur Andersen, or WorldCom story hits the wires, it's difficult to ignore business ethics as an issue. And, as our world becomes more complex, sometimes the right answer, the one that meets the needs of the most stakeholders: employees, customers, potential employees, shareholders, and board members, lies somewhere in the middle.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Economic and Game Theory

What economists call game theory psychologists call the theory of social situations, which is an accurate description of what game theory is about. Although game theory is relevant to parlor games such as poker or bridge, most research in game theory focuses on how groups of people interact. There are two main branches of game theory: cooperative and noncooperative game theory. Noncooperative game theory deals largely with how intelligent individuals interact with one another in an effort to achieve their own goals. That is the branch of game theory I will discuss here.

This expansion takes place through their improved capabilities, which enable them to use their full potential to lead lives that are of value to them. As the first global Human Development Report published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) put it, the real wealth of a nation is its people and the purpose of development is to create an enabling environment for people to enjoy long, healthy, productive and creative lives (UNDP, 1990). His administration was better than his predecessors. His successors adopted his basic administration and policies and ruled successfully. In the early time of their rule Mughal rulers ruled according the Islamic Law like the Delhi Sultans. In business, the score is kept in dollars. The system of accounting provides the rules for keeping score. Some people don't understand keeping score in football. A lot of people don't understand keeping score in business. They get mixed up about profits, assets, cash flow, and return on investment. Discounted cash flow, current ratio, and book value per share leave them blank.
