Management

"Today, a skilled manager makes more than the owner. And owners fight each other to get the skilled managers."

- Mikhail Khodorkovsky

TOPIC OF THE DAY

21st Century Management

Management has been around since the dawn of civilization. In primitive societies almost everyone had to do physical labor. To escape this burden, about the only choices were going into politics (kings) or religion (priests).

Civilized urban societies led to more specialization, created new vocational alternatives to manual labor, and saw a tendency of those who did not work with their hands to look down on those who did. This particular attitude was fostered by scribes, who used their knowledge of writing to produce literature that mocked the illiterate laboring classes.

The best leader I ever knew died recently. I want to share some of the lessons I learned from him with those of you not fortunate enough to have known him.

At his funeral, I spoke with the woman who had been his office manager in what was to be his final career. "Whenever we went anywhere together" she said, "and met with people who had worked for him before, they always said to me 'You're lucky. Frank's such a great boss' and that they'd love to work for him again." What inspires that kind of loyalty in others? How did he learn it? Ideally, when employees themselves have been involved with the goal setting and the choosing the course of action to be followed by them, they are more likely to fulfill their responsibilities.
